Not Every Toy Needs to Be Educational (And That’s OK Too)

Not Every Toy Needs to Be Educational (And That’s OK Too)

Sarah Haines |

As parents, we feel it all the time.

That quiet pressure to make the right choices.
To pick toys that help our kids learn, develop, grow.

To make sure we're not needlessly spending money.

And don’t get us wrong - we’re big believers in educational toys and learning through play. It’s at the heart of what we do at Toybox Tales.

But here’s something we’ve learnt after nearly 5 years and tens of thousands of families…

Not every toy needs to be educational.

Sometimes, it’s just about fun.

The Pressure to “Get It Right”

Scroll through social media and it can feel like every toy needs a purpose:

  • Builds fine motor skills
  • Encourages STEM learning
  • Supports early literacy

And while those things are amazing… they can also make it feel like every purchase needs to tick a box.

But childhood isn’t a checklist.

The Toys They Actually Love

If you think about the toys your child reaches for the most, chances are it’s not always the “most educational” one.

It’s the one they:

  • Carry everywhere
  • Sleep with every night
  • Bring in the car, to the shops, to grandma’s house

The ones that bring comfort, joy, and a sense of familiarity.

For so many families right now, that looks like soft, snuggly favourites like our
👉 Squishmallows collection

👉 Ty Beanie Boo collection

They’re not about structured play or skill-building.

They’re about cuddles, imagination and feeling safe and happy

And that matters more than we sometimes give credit for.

Why “Just Fun” Is Still Valuable

Here’s the thing - fun isn’t separate from development.

When kids play freely, without expectation:

  • They use their imagination
  • They create their own stories
  • They learn emotional comfort and self-soothing

A toy that makes your child smile, laugh, or feel calm is still doing something incredibly important.

Even if it doesn’t come with a label.

It’s About Balance

At Toybox Tales, we’ll always champion:

  • Learning through play
  • Thoughtfully designed toys
  • Products that grow with your child

But we also believe in balance.

Because real life looks like:

  • Busy mornings
  • Tired afternoons
  • Moments where you just need something that works

And sometimes, that “something” is a toy that doesn’t teach anything… except how to enjoy being a kid.

Your Permission Slip

So if you’ve been overthinking your next toy purchase…

This is your reminder:

You don’t need to optimise every moment.
You don’t need to choose perfectly every time.

Sometimes, the best choice is the one that makes them light up.

Whether that’s a puzzle, a learning toy, or something soft and comforting like our
👉 Squishmallows range
or other playful favourites in our
👉 Soft Toys & Plush collection

Because Childhood Is Meant to Be Fun

There’s a lot of time for learning.

But childhood? It’s fleeting.

So yes - choose the educational toy.
Encourage curiosity. Support development.

But also?

Let them have the toy that makes them smile for no reason at all 💛
